The Detox diet has been around for centuries, and is based on the theory that potentially toxic substances that build up in your body can harmful to your health. From time to time, the detox diet has a resurgence and hits the mainstream again.  The detox diet encompasses many diets. A few of the more well-known ones include the raw food diet, the juice fast, the liquid diet and the liver cleanse diet.

The Benefits of Detox Diets
Whether or not there are any actual benefits from the detox diet is a matter of speculation. Those who use the detox diet sometimes claim to be more focused and to gain more energy, along with just feeling more cleansed. The science behind detox diets however, does not support any specific health benefits.

Some benefit can be gained by jumpstarting your weight loss plan. If used wisely, a detox program can give you the momentum you need to shed weight by giving you a way to quickly lose a few pounds. Since these diets are usually for no more than 7 to 10 days, it should be followed by a healthy diet and lifestyle that can be maintained for the long-term.

Safety Concerns and Side Effects
While some detox diets strive to cleanse the body via herbs or teas, there are some that are more stringent and accomplish the mission by near starvation methods and fasting. These types of detox diets are the most worrisome and require vigilance so as not to cause health problems.

Some of the more dangerous health effects that can occur with some detox diets are electrolyte imbalances, blood sugar problems, vitamin deficiencies, weakness and muscle loss.

Detox diets are best done in short spurts and are usually not meant for long-term solutions to achieve weight loss. Detox diets are not for everyone. Children, teens, pregnant or breastfeeding women, diabetics, those that are underweight, or those with significant health or digestive problems should not undergo a detox diet.

If you decide to try a detox diet, do the research first to make sure it is one with merit and sounds reasonable.

Recommended Foods
What you eat while on a detoxification diet will depend upon the specific diet you choose. There are however some foods that are acceptable for most diets.

Any amount of fresh fruits and vegetables will be beneficial. If you want to go the even healthier route, you can choose only organic produce.

Other good foods to use are rice or pasta, preferably brown rice and whole grain pasta. Beans, nuts, seeds and extra-virgin olive oil are also excellent choices for a detox program. Herbal teas, green tea and lemon juice are also excellent.

Make sure to drink plenty of water no matter which diet plan you choose. Water is especially beneficial during a detox diet as it will help to flush away any impurifications and toxins from your body.

Foods to Avoid
There are definite foods you should avoid when purifying your body. Such items include sugar of all kinds, alcohol, caffeine and dairy.

After a Detox Diet
When you have completed a detox diet, it is best to gradually return to eating more of your normal diet. Try however, to continue to eliminate or restrict food items that are said to have harmful toxins, such as sugar or alcohol. A detox cleanse should not be done more than once or twice a year. Choose your diet plan carefully, monitor how you are feeling and get plenty of rest during the diet.
