The Special K diet is a relatively new diet, with mixed results. The diet involves eating Special K cereal along with other foods to accomplish weight loss. Like many other diets, the Special K diet is a fad diet, and is not meant for the long-term. In fact, the diet was designed to be completed in two weeks.

What Can You Eat?
The Special K diet works by having you eat a serving of any type of Special K cereal with 2/3 cup of skim milk and your choice of either fruit or a Special K Protein Shake or Protein Meal Bar for breakfast. For lunch, replace your regular meal with your choice of a serving of any Special K cereal, a Protein Meal Bar or a Protein Shake. For dinner, eat your normal meal as you would any other day. In addition, you get two Special K snacks during the day. They can be Protein Snack Bars, Cereal or Bliss Bars, or Special K crackers. You may also have fruits and vegetables as additional snacks.

Does It Work?
The diet does work, but for the reason that the dieter will consume between 1500 and 1600 calories. Any reduction in calories at that level should trigger weight loss. The real question is whether the Special K is the best option for a weight loss plan.

Because the diet is based on the Special K cereal for 2 meals of the day, and snacks, it runs the risk of getting bland quickly. It's likely that the Special K diet will only be used as a temporary start for weight loss. Since the inception of the Special K diet, they have developed several "plans" to choose from. There is more variety, but you still need to consume quite a bit of the Special K brand food.

Another consideration is the expense of purchasing the cereal and snacks to be used everyday.

Is It Safe?
For a limited time, the Special K diet will likely be safe. However, it's important to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to help you get all of the vitamins, minerals and fiber that you need each day.

One important note is that Special K contains high fructose corn syrup, which has been found to be linked to pancreatic cancer.
