What started out as a fad diet almost 30 years ago continues to thrive and shows no signs of slowing down. No doubt a big part of the appeal is the short length, which appeals to most dieters. A 3 days diet is just short enough for most people to be able to complete it. Each of the three nights you are rewarded with vanilla ice cream, making it a little easier to stay the course.

How Does It Work?
The 3 days diet claims to work by using a specific combination of foods, which causes a unique metabolic reaction. This chemical reaction is said to cause weight loss.

Health Benefits
The 3 days diet is essentially a fad diet, so there is no scientific evidence to back up claims of weight loss, based on the metabolic reaction to the foods. It is not meant to be a long-term solution; however, you are allowed to repeat the diet again after waiting for 4 to 5 days. Be sure to eat a well-balanced, adequate diet in between the dieting cycles.

Risks and Side Effects
The amount of food on this diet is very restricted, so it involves essentially starving yourself for 3 days. Some critics of this diet say that weight loss in inevitable at this caloric level no matter what you eat. This diet is not for everyone. Children, teenagers, pregnant and nursing women any anyone with significant health problems should avoid this diet.

How Much Can You Lose?
There is anecdotal evidence of people losing up to 10 pounds during the three day duration. Of course, every person is different, so there are no guarantees. The diet must be followed exactly in order for it to work, according to some.

The Daily Menu

Day 1:
Breakfast
Black coffee or tea (Sweet & Low or Equal) or water
1 banana
1 slice toast with 1 T. peanut butter

Lunch
1/2 Cup of Tuna
1 slice toast
Black coffee or tea (Sweet & Low or Equal) or water

Dinner
3 ounces of lean meat or chicken (any kind)
1 cup green beans
1 cup carrots
1 apple
1 cup regular vanilla ice cream


Days 2 and 3 are very similar, with almost the same menu. After the third day, resume a normal diet.

As with any diet, drinking plenty of water is a must. Also, it is wise to supplement your diet with a vitamin supplement.
